Welcome to East Sussex GP specialty training programme

The decision on where you go for your GP training can be at the same time both exciting and daunting, as it can have such far-reaching consequences for your career as a doctor. Not only is there a bewildering number of training programmes to research and consider but also, if you’re successful in securing a placement of your first choice, will it turn out to be the right one for you? If you enjoy your training and take to the area, who knows? You might well wish to base yourself there as a fully-fledged GP and settle there permanently. There’s a lot to think about and weigh up.

Our excellent doctors and hospitals have an established reputation for the first-class training of GP registrars going back more than 30 years. We have an excellent team of programme directors and GP trainers with the experience and enthusiasm to stimulate, inspire and fully prepare you for the challenges of general practice in the future.

Our mission is to provide you with the educational, practical and personal support so you can fulfil your potential as a competent, confident and successful GP.

Why East Sussex?

If you’re seeking an outdoor lifestyle, culture and history as well as convenient access to London, East Sussex has it all – including significantly more hours of sunshine than elsewhere on the mainland of Britain! Stretching from exciting and extraordinary Seaford along the south coast, the county takes in Newhaven, Eastbourne, Bexhill, Hastings (one of the Cinque Ports) and the ancient town of Rye. Inland you’ll find historic Battle, the market towns of Uckfield and Lewes and many picturesque villages.

Specialty GP training (GPST) hospital placements within East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust are provided at Conquest Hospital at St Leonards-on-Sea and at Eastbourne District General Hospital.

Eastbourne boasts sailing and other watersports and great walking in the South Downs National Park. It’s the home of the pre-Wimbledon ladies tennis tournament and a four day spectacular air show. It boasts great shopping and eating, three good golf courses, theatres, cinemas, museums and exhibitions, with excellent rail and road links to Brighton and London.

Situated in the heart of 1066 country, historic Hastings is a trendy destination with artisan shops and boutiques in the Old Town, gourmet cafes and delis, the Jerwood Gallery of contemporary art, film festivals and farmers’ markets. Your friends will be pretty keen to visit you at weekends!

We have GP practices throughout the county where you can do your placement – ranging from more urban settings to coastal and rural locations.

This year we have a 100% CSA success rate and a high percentage of trainees choose to remain in East Sussex after their training, either as a salaried or GP partner – local GPs have a high regard for those trained locally.
